Speech Therapy

Speech Language Pathology pertaining to Neurogenic (giving rise to or arising from the nerves or the nervous system) and Cognitive-Communication Disorders is the assessment and treatment of:

  • speech (articulation, apraxia, dysarthria, ataxia)
  • language (expressive and receptive)
  • cognition (attention, memory, problem solving, executive function)
  • social communication skills (social interactions).

Evaluation and treatment by a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) involves education and training to remediate, improve and/or learn skills and strategies to compensate so that individuals can achieve greater independence in daily living tasks and improve functional communication abilities in an effort to maximize quality of life. During the evaluation, the SLP will discuss and assess the areas of need and develop a treatment plan to improve or restore/retrain skills. Each evaluation will result in a unique, carefully designed plan of care, including short and long-term goals, frequency of visits and an estimated care map. Clients who may benefit from Speech Language Pathology services include those who have suffered a stroke, traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere impairment or have a certain type of neurogenic communicative disorder (i.e. aphasia, anomia, agraphia, alexia) or speech disorder (apraxia, dysarthria).

Brain Health Awareness, Education and Wellness Consultation

Brain Health is key to preventing cognitive decline as we age. Our brains control everything we do; our mood, memory, how we strategize, focus, communicate, make decisions and problem solve. Essentially, “we are our brains.” It is never too late or too early to begin nourishing and challenging our brains. There are many ways in which to boost our ability to promote neurogenesis and neuroplasticity within our brains. During this type of consultation, the speech therapist will assess general brain health and wellness, including but not limited to: Normal signs of aging, mild to severe cognitive impairments, “gut to brain” connection (how the foods we eat affect our gut microbiome and how we can nurture a healthy microbiome to improve cognitive function) and cognitive decline prevention techniques. At the time of initial consultation, client goals and brain health objectives will be discussed, and an individualized brain health and wellness plan will be established. The speech therapist will review the client’s current brain fitness regimen and tailor programs to individuals to adequately meet the goals.

Traumatic Brain Injuries and Cognitive Rehabilitation / Restoration of Skills

You may have trouble with attention, memory and problem solving. Higher level skills like setting goals, planning and being aware of how you behave may be a problem. Learning new skills and information can be hard. But you will probably still remember most things from before the injury. Your speech may be hard to understand after the injury. This may be due to weak muscles, called dysarthria. Or, you may have problems controlling your muscles, called apraxia. You may not understand what others say to you or what you read. You may also have a hard time using words to tell others what you want or need. Spelling and writing can also be a problem. The rules we follow when we talk with others may be hard for you. You may not be able to understand jokes or nonverbal cues. You may say the wrong thing at the wrong time or interrupt others.

If you have undergone a traumatic brain injury, whether it be due to a fall, car accident or blow to the head and are experiencing any of these speech and language or social/pragmatic deficits, you and I will work together to develop a functional approach to achieve the highest level of independent function for participation in daily living.

My intervention approach capitalizes on strengths and addresses weakness related to underlying structures and functions that affect communication, facilitates your activities and participation by assisting my client in acquiring new skills and strategies, compensating for cognitive-communicative impairments by teaching compensatory strategies to support you/your family and providing client/family/caregiver education regarding the nature of deficits, the course of treatment and prognosis for recovery.

Counseling and Caregiver Support related to Dementia and Cognitive Decline

Much of our stress can be related to caring for our aging loved ones. Stress Management is crucial for all as it plays a vital role in our own brains ability to remain healthy and continue its neuronal growth. Initially, the speech therapist will sit down with you individually or as a group to discuss the root causes of caregiver stress, ways in which they can be reduced and how to successfully manage your role as a caregiver to prevent caregiver burn out. We will map out a plan of care and the speech therapist will provide you with functional strategies, valuable resources and practical changes you can begin to implement into your everyday life.
